"Red" European violets, or viola odorata:

2-2008 055

I'm sorry they weren't next to the "regular" deep purple violets so the contrast in hue would be more obvious. And I'm not much of a photographer, but you get the idea.

Corydalis, sometimes called Larkspur. The exact name of this variety has slipped my mind:

2-2008 056

[ETA 5/1/08 to add: It's actually known as corydalis solida "Beth Evans"]

So it the next book going to be all in shades of purple ?

Ask me about the funniest thing I heard secondhand recently about "comics" + "purple."

Okay. What's the funniest thing you heard secondhand recently about "comics" and "purple"?

(The next "Hereville" will probably be in black and white, actually. I like how the B&W looks, and I'm interested in ways I can produce pages faster.)

mr_xeno, for reasons known strictly to himself, was reading pages and pages on Wikipedia about the alternate/future histories of Marvel Comics characters. I looked over his shoulder at one point. I swear to you on a stack of compost, there was a passage in there that said something like,

"The Purple Man [a villain with powers of hypnosis or something like that] brainwashed somebody-or-other to go attack Daredevil but said somebody-or-other mistook The Scarlet Witch for Daredevil and attacked her instead."

Given how ever-more hypersexualized female characters in superhero land become every time I think to look at them, this line just struck me as about the funniest thing I've read since who-knows-when. You'd have to be a pretty lousy hypnotist for that outcome to occur, no ?

Of course, I should have checked to make sure that either Daredevil or The Scarlet Witch in whatever-alternate-universe-it-was hadn't undergone sex changes or whatever. But still...

Wow, your larkspur is way ahead of ours. Sadly, almost all of our violets are white, which is my least favorite violet color.

I'm actually behind most of the neighbors. Their stuff always blooms before ours, possibly due to the combo of cold + soil that desperately needs something to eat.

As for the monochrome violet problem, these folks can help you out. I totally recommend 'em, unless you have both the patience and the space to cultivate your own violets from seed.
