I'm with you on the doubts about the second para. The Democrats -- from the auditioning pundit-wannabes harvesting the rank and file, straight up to the sinecured struttin' dudes crowing at each on the gilded shit hill -- cannot respond to events with a broadly enlightened self-interest, at this point in time. I wouldn't absolutely rule out the possibility that they'll develop the capacity of doing so, at some distant point in the future. But they have no need to do so and the opinion leaders are making good money maintaining the system that makes sure they don't need to. Who's going to take a chance on being picked off by a hungrier wannabe? Best for the rest of us to just let them gnaw on each other and spend our political energy elsewhere.
