kotra, posting in damnportlanders @ 4:44pm: Comedians of Comedy - Portland video
This is a pretty old video (October 2007), but I thought it might appeal to the sense of humor here. There is swearing.

saladpants, posting in damnportlanders @ 4:33pm: Just came from the Obama rally at the Portland waterfront.  [info]mediaboy tells me that it was the largest Obama rally ever--estimated 60,000 people inside the gates, and another 15,000 outside.  The line to get in snaked all around downtown Portland up and back several times, ending up at PSU, quite a ways away from the waterfront.  Our early arrival allowed us to be really close to the stage--about 200 feet is my guess.  Also, the Decemberists played for free for an hour.  Awesome.  Unfortunately, I had only my camera phone, so the photos suck, but they are better than nothing.

Also, obviously not taken by me (we are about a centimeter above Obama's head, just down from the shadow on the tree):

meisterdorf, posting in damnportlanders @ 3:18pm: dont go downtown
I took the bike downtown for a nice ride. BIG Mistake! On the west side we have the Obama rally. On the east side we have the Nami walk for mental health. I swear there must be a 100,000 people downtown.
existence_ltd, posting in damnportlanders @ 2:19pm: Obama live feed?
Anyone know if it's going to be televised or if there's a site that's showing the rally?

UPDATE: Found it!

The line to see Obama goes all the way through downtown and ends at the PSU library.
schrendymae, posting in damnportlanders @ 12:00pm: Reel Mower
I was wondering if anyone had one of those "reel mowers" that they wanted to give away or sell to me. Our lawn is to small to justify a big, gas guzzling lawnmower. We live in NE but can travel to pick it up if necessary.

Thanks.

prettymuchjulia, posting in damnportlanders @ 11:29am: Going to see Obama speak today. Anyone else?
If so, why are you going? Undecided, curious, or supporter... or maybe you believe the exact opposite?
leroy_brown242, posting in damnportlanders @ 10:12am: Photo Printing
For the longest time my photography was a hobby. I went places and did things and took photos along the way. IT seems it's gotten a little more advanced than that now. People seem to like my photos, and I need the money.

So my question is: "Where do photo geeks on the west side (Or anywhere if the deal is good and people are awesome) get their photos printed for sale?"

Wallgreens is good enough for gifts and my own wall, but they are not going to cut it for things I mean to sell.

I used Right Angle once to print up some shots for gifts. They put down my work and then gave me poor quality prints. I go to DP for insulting snark, not people I pay money to. :)

  • I'm looking for photo printing.
  • I don't want to pay and arm and a leg, but am willing to pay for quality.
  • West side preferred.

Do you know where to find free moving boxes?

Thanks in advance! =^_^=
aimeegee, posting in damnportlanders @ 9:43am: need lawnmower!
Is there some magical place I can rent a lawnmower today without spending all of my paycheck?

Or do you live near NE 10th and Jarrett and have a lawnmower to lend? I'll refill with gas and give you beer or something (if that's what makes you happy)

My lawn is beyond disgusting. I feel bad for my neighbors. I feel bad for my dog... she forgot all of her potty training because she's afraid of the lawn. Please help!
sassyps, posting in damnportlanders @ 9:17am: ArkanCouver Hair cutters
I need a referral for a good er great hair stylist in VANCOUVER. Washington. You know north of the river. That place you never go to...

Anywho--as always there are some criterion:

~in Vancouver, Washington
~good with cutting curly afro-puffy hair
~can get an appointment this month
~affordable (which to me is ~$20-30)

So hit me with your best shot DPers!

Well, it looks as though the weather pundits are predicting cooler temps today, breaking our massive TWO DAY heat wave and probably saving the lives of some of our elderly, disabled, underprivileged, young, or middle-aged citizens. Yesterday got up to 347 degrees, just shy of Friday's incredible 359 degree record-breaker. People justifiably freaked out, and only those wrapped in foil survived any trip longer than a jaunt to the local 7/11 for more dry ice.

Me, I kinda dug the sunshine and warmer temperatures. If you're going to live in Portland and bitch about cool, wet weather, then you had better shut your piehole when the good stuff comes. That's what I'M sayin'.

The process here in Portland goes something like this:
-ah, the fall has arrived. I love these cool, sunny days.
-Oooh, winter. I'm here because I like the rain.
-It's rained for 6 days now. Fuck, where's the sun?
-Ah, April. I like April, except this kind of April when it rains the ENTIRE TIME. I really liked those couple days of sun in February.
-May... hey, it's going to be 65 today! I'm going to go to work naked!
-WHAT THE FUCK IT'S 90 DEGREES JESUS THIS IS PORTLAND WHERE ARE MY CLOUDS?
-Hmmm... June. I'm tired of sun. Wish it was wintertime again.

Me, I'll take whatever ya got. Whatever is going on up above, I still get Portland under my feet.

How long would it take me to drive to the nearest ocean beach??
Okay, the nearest Beach, where the wind isn't going to be blowing so hard that you have to wear goggles to walk down the beach,
Or one where it will be nice and warm?

If you're looking for something fun to do and you don't have any money to spend, might I recommend visiting 30 Rooms?

There are literally tons of great things to see and experience from many mind-bogglingly talented Portland artists like Eatcho, Sarah Cruse, Jennifer Mercede (info below) and, yes, even your's truly!

Go get lost in the hallways at Milepost 5!

This struck a chord. I've been thinking about that a lot lately.

knittinggoddess, posting in damnportlanders @ 12:30am: The Art of a Mix Tape
I'm making two mix CDs for a friend, and unlike usual, they're actual CDs rather than playlists. This means I have to really pay attention to song order. What determines how well one song flows into the next? How do you set up your CD? Does it have a logical progression, or do you intersperse genres, tempos and moods? What do you look for in the opening and closing tracks?

The "it was good, but I'm leaving you because it's not what either of us need" playlist has split into "quiet folky and indie soft" and "rock/loud country" discs. I'm sandwiching Death Cab between The Indigo Girls and The Postal Service, and The Silversun Pickups between Bonnie Raitt and Tracy Bonham. It seems wrong to have Maroon 5 on the same hour as Rilo Kiley, but that's the beauty of playlists, right? A friend once made me a CD with Picard's flute song from the Star Trek: TNG episode "Inner Light", Ella Fitzgerald and this funk remix song his older brother did, so my standards may be skewed.

Artistes, please share your wisdom.
Current Music: yes, I am reminded of the Avenue Q song too

danielquasar, posting in damnportlanders @ 11:54pm: Stage designers?
Not sure where to ask but I figured I'd try here.

I'm trying to design the stage for my concert and my idea is to use the lotus flower for inspiration. I want to use mylar/silver reflective paper to build a giant lotus flower-like prop that will go from the stage and up. Right behind me so it will be kinda like a backdrop against myself. I hope that makes sense. Anyways, I am having trouble finding the right kind of paper, cause everywhere its way to expensive, I needa lot of it to make it big enough. I also am having trouble with figuringout how to design it. I mean I know what I want it to look like, it's just getting to that point and figuring out how to make it stay standing is the hard part.

Any help would be awesome!

glowing_fish, posting in damnportlanders @ 11:33pm: Shortwave
So does anyone on this list own a Shortwave radio?
AFAIK, the point of Shortwave is that you get global reception...but I still wonder whether it might be better or worse from place to place. Is Portland in any way special as far as Shortwave goes?

somerandomthing, posting in mst3k @ 12:43am: Oh, I think we all know what he does with it.
My husband was talking to me about a friend of his who drives a commercial truck:
"He collects wood chips and sawdust, and do you know what he does with it?"

"He puts them in his underwear?" (Followed by lots of giggling.) My husband didn't get it.

You can wait for years for a straight line like that. Its kind of like waiting for someone to make a disparaging remark about Thunderdome.

PS. Boringly enough, the friend sells it to a place that makes cheap pressboard furniture. I liked my idea better.

j_squared_fam, posting in damnportlanders @ 9:26pm: daycare recommendations
so I looked through tags and such but couldn't find anything relevant. forgive me if it's there. also, I posted this to pdx_mommies but no one responded. things are pretty quiet over there ... anyway, here goes:

We're looking at a new daycare for our 14 month old daughter. She's currently enrolled in a Kindercare facility that we love but we're moving to the Beaverton area (Murray/Scholls Ferry area) and need something either in that area or close to work near the 217/I5 intersection. We're looking at Learning Tree on Bonita. Have you heard anything about them? Do you know of any other good daycares? We're open to in-home if it were well established, licensed, and pretty structured.
I appreciate any feedback - positive and negative. Thanks!!

I'm slowly turning my boyfriend into James Bond.

Two years ago he got the fast car driving lessons.
Last year was motorcycle lessons.

This year: guns.

Where is the best place to buy a class or gift certificate for a class to learn to shoot? Group classes fine. I'm also considering taking a class myself, so if we could do it together, that might be fun. I know next to nothing about classes so I can either pick a random one online (yes, I can google) or go off a recommendation which is what I'd prefer. Closer to downtown the better, but now that he has a motorcycle (eep!) he can get pretty much anywhere.

vampyrecat @ 7:51pm: [info]vajrabot wants me to play the play-by-post game on Burn Immediately. He should post a link in a comment so I can find it more easily, k thx.

Today we went to the Portland Children's Museum. I'm tired. I have to go take the pass back to the library. I think Tenzin had a really good time.

Charlotte is grabbing food for the past few days but then she just spits it back out after tasting it for a while. I think she's interested in food but just not sure how to eat.

I listened to Coraline in the car. It was good. I can't wait for the movie to be done, it should be a good one.

Prince Caspian just came out (the Narnia movie). Today Tenzin said he wants to ride the bus with Baby Caspian. Caspian isn't really a baby any more, but that's ok.

I need to be smaller around the middle. It's totally annoying, and I think I'm bigger than I've ever been, or close to it. I'm getting more exercise now that we're going out during the day. Getting sick for 3 weeks helped me get fatter because I couldn't do much more than stay alive and keep the kids alive.
